What it is

HRP-5P is a heavy-duty bipedal humanoid robot released by Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in September 2018. It stands 182 cm tall, weighs 101 kg and has 37 degrees of freedom in total (16 in the arms, 12 in the legs, 3 in the waist, 2 in the neck and 4 in the hands). Its core target is the construction industry: it can independently install plasterboard, drill holes and carry large panels and other heavy materials, helping to ease Japan's construction labour shortage.

HRP-5P uses full-DOF torque control, and its two arms work together to carry and assemble large building materials; its work demonstration (automatically locating plasterboard, drilling and driving screws) was shown publicly at AIST in 2018 and covered by international media including CNN. It continues AIST's research lineage from HRP-2 (2002) through HRP-4, pushing humanoid payload capacity and task precision toward engineering practicality.

HRP-5P remains in use as an experimental platform for research and industry collaboration in construction automation, and is a representative achievement of Japan's push to put humanoid robots onto construction sites.
