Phoenix is a general-purpose humanoid robot unveiled by Canada's Sanctuary AI in May 2023, standing 170 cm tall, weighing 70 kg, with a 25 kg payload. Its standout features are hydraulically actuated dexterous hands with 20 degrees of freedom per hand and tactile sensing: the fingertips can detect forces of about 5 mN, more sensitive than the human hand (3 mN), enabling fine operations such as turning screws and packaging.
Phoenix is driven by the Carbon cognitive system, which combines large language models, deep learning and reinforcement learning, and can quickly learn new tasks through VR demonstration. In March 2023 its predecessor system completed 110 retail tasks in a pilot at a Mark's retail store in Canada; Phoenix has since been iterated (now in its eighth generation) and piloted in retail and manufacturing (Magna) scenarios.
Sanctuary AI's goal is to create 'general-purpose labor intelligence': robots capable of any work a human can do. The company has raised more than US$100 million, and in 2025–2026 announced an expansion into industrial robotics for high-quality data collection.
