Atlas is Boston Dynamics' bipedal humanoid robot, now fully electric and built for industrial work.
Atlas is Boston Dynamics' bipedal humanoid robot. The hydraulic version, released in July 2013, became famous for highly dynamic capabilities such as parkour, backflips and dancing, and was officially retired on April 16, 2024. The next day (April 17, 2024), Boston Dynamics unveiled the fully electric Atlas: it uses custom high-power electric actuators and planetary roller screws, shedding the noise and maintenance burden of the hydraulic system, and its range of motion can exceed human limits (the head can rotate 180°, for example).
The electric Atlas was positioned as an industrial product rather than a research demonstration from the outset: target scenarios are automotive manufacturing, material handling and logistics sorting, with Hyundai Motor running on-site pilots as an early customer. In November 2025 Boston Dynamics launched the production Atlas for enterprise customers, with published specifications of 1.9 m tall, 90 kg, 56 rotary joints, 50 kg instantaneous payload (30 kg continuous), IP67 protection, about 4 hours of runtime and self-swappable batteries — the world's first product positioned as an "enterprise-grade industrial humanoid robot".
Atlas follows a commercial path of a small number of early customers first and gradual scaling later. It ships with the Orbit fleet management platform and an AI/reinforcement-learning software stack, and is seen as a landmark product in the move of humanoid robots from the lab to the factory.
