What it is

iCub 3 is the latest generation of the iCub open-source humanoid developed at IIT in Genoa. At about 105 cm and 33 kg it is sized like a five-year-old child and provides 53 degrees of freedom, sensitive skin and torque-controlled legs. Its 2022 avatar system let an operator in Genoa embody the robot in Venice, roughly 290 km away, using VR and haptic feedback.

Highlights

01Open-source hardware and software (GPL), with 40+ robots in labs worldwide.
0253 degrees of freedom at 105 cm and 33 kg with battery.
03Full-body capacitive tactile skin with more than 3,000 sensors.
042022 avatar demonstration linked Genoa and Venice, about 290 km apart.
05Legs use elastic actuators for human-like walking.
