Ameca is an expressive semi-humanoid robot unveiled by the British company Engineered Arts in December 2021. It stands 187 cm tall including its base, weighs about 49 kg, and has 51 degrees of freedom in total, 24 of them in the head and face. It has been called "the most realistic humanoid robot on Earth": a metal skeleton paired with resin synthetic skin lets it produce extremely natural human micro-expressions — surprise, smiling, blinking, shrugging — along with arm gestures and shoulder movement.
Ameca is built on Engineered Arts' in-house Tritium robot operating system and Mesmer face engine (faces are modelled from 3D scans of real people), and natively supports connecting to large language models such as GPT-4 for real-time conversation, emotional expression and eye contact. It has no lower body and is mounted on a fixed base; it is aimed mainly at exhibitions, science museums, corporate events and reception scenarios, and also frequently appears in global media as an embodied-AI demonstration platform for large models.
At CES 2022, Ameca went viral for videos of human-like reactions such as "looking at its hands", becoming one of the world's most popular expressive robots; its rental-based commercial model has also served a number of companies and exhibition venues.
